How Much Should I Save Each Month?
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: How Much Should I Save Each Month?
  • Overview: A good starting target is 20% of your take-home pay, using the 50/30/20 rule — but the rule needs adjusting when rent eats more than half your income. Here is the math for both cas...

Direct answer: aim to save 20% of your take-home pay each month. That is the savings slice of the 50/30/20 rule: about 50% of your take-home pay for needs, 30% for wants, and 20% for savings and extra debt payments. If 20% is impossible right now, save something — even 5% — and raise it over time. A plan you can actually follow beats a perfect plan you abandon.

The top guides on this question repeat the same 20% figure and the same example. What they rarely show is what happens when your rent alone breaks the rule, or how long it takes to build a real emergency fund. Those are the two gaps this guide closes.

Worked example — the standard case. Take-home pay of $3,000 a month. Needs at 50% = $3,000 x 0.50 = $1,500. Wants at 30% = $3,000 x 0.30 = $900. Savings at 20% = $3,000 x 0.20 = $600. Over a year, savings add up to $600 x 12 = $7,200 — before any interest, which we are deliberately not assuming here.

Now the emergency fund question: experts commonly suggest 3 to 6 months of essential expenses. If your monthly needs are $1,500, six months means 6 x $1,500 = $9,000. Saving $600 a month, that takes $9,000 / $600 = 15 months. Knowing the timeline matters — it stops you from feeling like a failure in month three, when you have only $1,800 and the target still looks far away.

Worked example — when needs break the rule. Suppose take-home pay is $2,400 and needs cost $1,680, which is $1,680 / $2,400 = 70% of income. Forcing a 50/30/20 split here is fantasy budgeting. Instead, split what remains: $2,400 - $1,680 = $720 left, divided as $480 for wants (20% of income) and $240 for savings (10% of income). The savings rate drops, but the budget survives — and a budget that survives is the only kind that works.

The order of your savings matters too. First, build a small starter cushion of $500 to $1,000 so a flat tyre does not go on a credit card. Second, pay off high-interest debt — its interest rate usually beats any savings return. Third, build the full 3-to-6-month emergency fund. Only then does long-term investing become the priority.

How to make the number automatic: move the savings on payday, before you can spend it. A transfer that happens the day money arrives is a decision you make once; a transfer you 'mean to do' at month-end is a decision you remake — and usually lose — thirty times a month.

Bottom line: 20% is the target, not a pass-or-fail test. Calculate your own percentages from your real take-home pay, adjust honestly when needs exceed 50%, and measure progress in months of expenses covered, not in guilt about the gap.
