  • Overview: Liquid staking tokens like stETH and rETH let you stake and stay liquid at the same time, but they add smart-contract risk, depeg risk, and validator concentration risk on top of o...

A liquid staking token is a token you receive when you stake through a liquid staking protocol instead of staking directly. You deposit your crypto, the protocol stakes it with validators on your behalf, and you get a receipt token that represents your staked position.

The appeal is liquidity. Direct staking locks your assets for a period, while a liquid staking token stays tradable: you can hold it, trade it, or use it in other apps while your underlying stake keeps earning rewards.

The token's value generally tracks the underlying staked asset plus accumulated rewards, so your position grows in value over time rather than paying out separate rewards. But it can trade at a small discount or premium depending on market conditions, liquidity, and redemption queues.

Liquid staking adds a smart-contract layer between you and your stake. If the protocol has a bug, a compromised validator set, or a governance failure, your receipt token can lose value even if the underlying network is fine.

There is also depeg risk. In a market panic, liquid staking tokens have traded below their redemption value because holders rushed to sell faster than the protocol could process unstaking.

Choose established protocols with audits, transparent validator sets, and clear redemption mechanics. Liquid staking tokens are powerful tools, but they are not savings accounts, and they should never be treated as risk-free yield.

Liquid staking tokens become more powerful, and more complex, when used inside decentralized finance. Because they are tradable, they can serve as collateral for borrowing, provide liquidity in pools, or be restaked for additional rewards. Each use adds another protocol layer, and each layer adds its own smart-contract risk, liquidation risk, or fee. A position that looks like simple staking can quietly become a leveraged, multi-protocol exposure if you are not careful.

The practical rule is to count your layers. Holding a liquid staking token is one layer. Lending it out is two. Borrowing against it to buy more is three, and restaking the result is four. Each layer multiplies both potential return and potential loss, and a failure at any layer can cascade downward. For most users, holding the token plainly, without leverage, captures most of the benefit with far less risk than a stacked strategy.
