  • Primary Signal: What Is a Crypto Points Programme? How Points Farming Works in 2026
  • Overview: Points programmes reward protocol activity with points that may convert to tokens later. Learn how they work, how to judge their value, and why points are not the same as guarantee...

Crypto points programmes have become one of the most common ways new protocols attract users before launching a token. Users earn points for using the protocol, completing tasks, referring others, or holding assets, and the project hints, but rarely promises, that points may convert into tokens later. Understanding that distinction is essential: points are a tracking system and a marketing tool, not a token, not a guarantee, and not a claim on future value until the project defines conversion rules, if it ever does.

Points are typically earned through activity the project wants to encourage, such as trading volume, liquidity provision, daily usage, or completing quests. Some programmes award points linearly, so more activity means proportionally more points, while others use tiers, multipliers, or time-based bonuses that reward sustained activity over bursts. Reading the programme's official rules, including how points are calculated and whether they decay, expire, or reset, is essential before committing time or capital, because those details determine whether your effort actually accumulates.

Referral points deserve special caution. They can multiply earnings quickly for people with large audiences, but they also attract spam, fake accounts, and sybil behaviour that projects actively filter. Genuine referrals, where you introduce real users who actually use the product, are valuable; mass referral farming through fake accounts risks disqualification of all linked accounts. If a programme's main path to points is referrals rather than product usage, treat it as a marketing campaign, not as a product you should trust with funds.

Judging a points programme requires looking beyond the points counter. Ask whether the protocol has a working product with real users, whether its team and backers are credible, whether the points rules are transparent and stable, and whether the activity required matches your normal usage or forces you into expensive, artificial behaviour. A programme that requires high gas fees, large capital lock-ups, or constant daily tasks for uncertain points may cost more than it could ever return, even if a token eventually launches.

Dilution is the hidden risk of points farming. As more users join a programme, the total points supply grows, and your share of any future distribution shrinks unless your activity grows proportionally. Early participants often benefit from lower competition, but that advantage fades as a programme becomes popular, and projects sometimes change rules mid-campaign, reducing multipliers or adding requirements that disadvantage later or smaller participants. Track your points relative to the programme's growth, not just your absolute total, to judge whether continued effort is still worthwhile.

Points programmes also change behaviour in ways that can be costly. Users may trade more than they otherwise would, hold assets they would not otherwise hold, or pay fees they would not otherwise pay, all to earn points whose future value is unknown. A disciplined rule helps: only do activities you would consider reasonable without points, or activities whose cost is small relative to your portfolio, and never borrow, leverage, or lock funds you need simply to chase a points multiplier that may change tomorrow.

Use points programmes as a way to discover and learn protocols you find interesting, with points as a secondary bonus, not as the primary reason to use a product. Keep a simple record of programmes you join, their rules, and your points balance, review them monthly, and drop programmes whose rules have become unfavourable or whose product no longer interests you. Points can lead to meaningful rewards for early, genuine users, but they are best treated as a lottery ticket you earn through learning, not as income you can plan around.

Keep a monthly note of each programme's rules and your points balance, because programmes change frequently, and a rule change can quietly erase the value of weeks of effort.
