  • Primary Signal: How to Calculate Your Crypto Staking Rewards: APY vs APR Explained With Examples
  • Overview: A quoted 12% yield can mean very different things depending on whether it is APR or APY. Learn the formulas, work through real examples, and project your staking rewards before you...

Staking rewards look simple on the surface: lock up coins, earn a percentage. But the percentage a platform quotes can be APR or APY, and the difference between the two can quietly change your expected return by a meaningful amount over a year. Add validator commissions, lock-up periods and token price moves, and the headline number on a staking page is rarely the number that lands in your wallet.

APR, or annual percentage rate, is simple interest. If you stake 1,000 coins at 8% APR, you earn 80 coins over a year, no matter how often rewards are paid out. APY, or annual percentage yield, includes compounding: rewards are added back to your stake and then earn rewards themselves. That same 8% APR compounded daily becomes about 8.33% APY, or roughly 83 coins on 1,000 staked. The gap grows as the rate rises: 20% APR compounds to about 22.13% APY with daily compounding.

Before comparing two staking options, always check which figure each one quotes. Native staking on chains like Cardano usually quotes APR because rewards accrue without automatic reinvestment. Liquid staking tokens such as stETH auto-compound, so protocols quote APY. A platform advertising 12% APY is not automatically better than one advertising 11% APR, and a platform quoting APY while its rewards are paid weekly may be overstating the compounding benefit.

To project your own rewards, start with the net rate, not the gross protocol rate. Validators typically take 5 to 10% commission, liquid staking protocols take around 10% of rewards, and exchange wrappers layer on another cut. If a chain pays 7% gross and your validator takes 10%, your net rate is 6.3%. Then apply the simple formula: stake multiplied by net APR multiplied by the fraction of the year you stake. For a quick APY estimate, use the formula APY equals one plus APR divided by the number of compounding periods, raised to that number, minus one.

Worked example: you stake 500 SOL at a net 6% APR with rewards restaked monthly. Simple interest gives 30 SOL in a year. With monthly compounding the effective APY is about 6.17%, or roughly 30.8 SOL. The difference is small at 6%, which is exactly the point: at low rates compounding barely matters, and chasing a slightly higher APY is less important than picking a reliable validator and a coin you actually want to hold.

Three costs routinely eat into projected rewards. First, transaction fees for claiming and restaking: on cheap chains this is trivial, but restaking small rewards frequently can cost more than the extra yield it creates. Second, unbonding periods: many chains lock your coins for days or weeks after you unstake, during which you earn nothing and cannot sell. Third, and biggest, token price risk. A 15% yield on a token that falls 40% is still a large loss in dollar terms, so judge the asset first and the yield second.

The practical routine is simple. Write down the gross rate, subtract commissions to get your net rate, confirm whether the figure is APR or APY, and project rewards with a calculator before committing. Revisit the projection every few months, because staking yields drift as more people stake: Ethereum's base rate has fallen below 3% as nearly a third of all ETH became staked. A calculator projection is an illustration under current conditions, not a promise, and it should never be the only reason you buy a coin.

Many staking calculators are free online, and they are worth using before you commit, because they let you change the rate, the compounding frequency and the duration and see the result instantly. Run the same numbers through two calculators to catch entry errors, and re-run the projection quarterly, because yields drift. A calculator is only as honest as the rate you type in, so always use the net rate after commissions, never the headline rate.
