  • Overview: Stablecoins pay real yield without the price swings of volatile coins — but the safest-looking rates often hide the most risk. Compare the main ways to earn on USDT and USDC, and l...

Stablecoin yields are the quiet corner of crypto earning. Instead of staking a token that can fall 30% in a week, you park USDT or USDC and earn a percentage that is quoted in dollars, so the number you see is close to the number you keep. In 2026, realistic yields on major stablecoins sit roughly between 4% and 10% depending on the method, with higher figures almost always carrying higher risk. Understanding where the yield actually comes from is the whole game.

The simplest route is a centralised exchange or savings product. Platforms lend your stablecoins to margin traders or hold them in treasuries and pass part of the return to you. Rates are usually 4 to 6% and the experience feels like a bank account. The risk is counterparty risk: if the platform fails, your deposit is an unsecured claim, not your property. The collapses of 2022 taught the market this lesson, yet many savers still treat exchange yields as risk-free. They are not.

Decentralised lending protocols are the next step up. Supplying USDC to a large lending market typically earns a variable rate driven by borrowing demand, often 3 to 7%, and your funds sit in a smart contract rather than a company balance sheet. The risks shift from company failure to smart contract bugs and liquidity crunches, which is why sticking to battle-tested protocols with large total value locked matters more than chasing an extra percentage point on a new fork.

Liquidity pools pay more, often 8 to 15% or higher, but the yield is not free money. Stablecoin pools still carry smart contract risk, and the headline rate is usually boosted by token incentives that can dry up overnight. A pool advertising 25% APY may be paying 4% in real trading fees and 21% in a governance token whose price falls as fast as it is emitted. Always split the advertised rate into its parts before deciding.

Real-world asset products are the newest option: tokenised US Treasury bills and money-market funds that pay roughly the risk-free rate, currently around 4 to 5%. These are arguably the cleanest stablecoin yield available, because the return comes from government debt rather than crypto leverage. The trade-off is access: many of these products are restricted by geography or require identity verification, and some are only available to accredited investors.

Before choosing, run a short checklist. Who holds your funds, a company or a smart contract? What exactly generates the yield, lending, trading fees, or token emissions? How fast can you withdraw, and is there a lock-up or a queue? Has the protocol been audited, and has it survived a stress event? A yield that cannot answer these questions clearly is a yield to skip, no matter how attractive the number looks.

A sensible stablecoin strategy splits the difference: keep the bulk of your stablecoins in the lowest-risk option you can access, such as a treasury-backed product or a large lending protocol, and only put a small slice into higher-yield pools you understand. Stablecoins are supposed to be the safe part of a crypto portfolio, and the moment you chase the highest rate on the list, they stop being safe.

Depeg risk is the one stablecoin risk beginners underestimate. Both USDT and USDC have briefly traded below a dollar during stress events, and a stablecoin that loses its peg can fall faster than the yield you earned all year. Holding more than one stablecoin spreads that risk, and keeping part of your stablecoin balance in a tokenised treasury product rather than a lending pool removes the depeg exposure for that slice. Check the issuer's reserves and attestation reports before trusting a stablecoin with a large balance, and treat any stablecoin you have not researched as a speculative asset, not a dollar.
