Restaking is a newer crypto concept that builds on regular staking: instead of staked assets securing only one blockchain, they are reused, or restaked, to help secure additional protocols, services, or networks, in exchange for additional rewards. The best-known example is EigenLayer on Ethereum, where staked ether can be restaked to secure actively validated services, but the general idea now appears across several ecosystems. Understanding restaking starts with understanding what it adds to normal staking, and what it risks in return.

In regular staking, your assets are committed to securing one network, and you earn rewards for that commitment while accepting lock-ups and slashing risk for that network alone. Restaking extends that commitment: the same staked assets are pledged to additional services, each with its own rules, rewards, and slashing conditions. In effect, you are lending your economic security to more than one system at once, which is why restaking can pay more, and why it can also expose you to more ways to lose a portion of your stake.

Actively validated services, the additional protocols secured by restaked assets, vary widely in purpose and maturity. They may include data availability layers, oracle networks, bridges, or other infrastructure that benefits from Ethereum's economic security without building its own validator set from scratch. Each service sets its own requirements, rewards, and slashing rules, so restaking is not a single product with a single risk profile; it is a framework containing many different services, each of which must be judged separately.

Slashing in restaking works differently from regular staking because multiple slashing conditions can apply to the same stake. If you restake to three services, misbehaviour or failure in any one of them could, depending on the design, slash a portion of your stake, even if the underlying blockchain itself is functioning perfectly. That stacking of conditions is the central risk of restaking: more services mean more rewards, but also more independent ways for something to go wrong, and beginners often underestimate how those risks accumulate.

Liquid restaking adds another layer, similar to liquid staking, by issuing a receipt token for restaked assets that can be traded or used elsewhere. That token introduces its own market price, smart contract risk, and protocol fees, on top of the restaking risks themselves. As with liquid staking, the receipt token may trade at a discount to the underlying value in stressed markets, and the protocol issuing it becomes an additional counterparty whose security and governance matter as much as the underlying services it secures.

Rewards from restaking come from multiple sources, including the base staking yield, fees or incentives from each additional service, and sometimes points programmes run by restaking protocols themselves. Those combined rewards can look attractive, but they should be evaluated service by service, with attention to whether rewards are paid in a stable asset or a volatile new token, whether they require lock-ups, and whether the service has a track record or is still experimental. A high combined yield built from several unproven services is riskier than a lower yield from one established service.

For beginners, the sensible approach to restaking is to learn first and stake small, if at all. Understand regular staking thoroughly, then study one restaking protocol and one service in depth before committing any assets, and limit restaking to a small share of your portfolio while you learn how rewards, unstaking, and slashing actually work in practice. Restaking is an important innovation in crypto security, and it may become a standard tool for long-term holders, but its layered risks mean it rewards patience and research far more than early, large commitments made on the basis of a headline yield alone.
